As stated on the previous page, the abandoned housing issue is quite a problem, and it is also wasting precious land that should and could be used by people, especially with such a large population density of over 6,000 people per square kilometre. The government has looked into these houses, and have tried to find out what the deal is with some of these houses. A lot of the time the owners have passed away, and the house has been given to their children or next of kin, but they are already living elsewhere, leaving these houses to become eyesores and fire hazards for people in the area. As this empty housing problem continues to grow, there is nothing really left to do, other than enforce the law where arson or trespassing may occur. Every year, roughly another 3,000 houses are left empty, continuing to cause a bigger problem for the future of Tokyo.
To fix the population density and decrease by hopefully a few thousand, Tokyo could try to build up more. If they took on China's work ethics, been able to build skyscrapers in a matter of weeks, Tokyo could build more high rise apartment buildings, providing better quality, hopefully cheaper housing for those living in Tokyo. As well as building up, Tokyo could utilise more space by building outwards, and enforcing new laws allowing the government to sell houses that have been vacant for a certain period of time, allowing people to use houses that aren't being used, and stopping fire hazards, and actually using the space that Tokyo has available, when they are facing population problems.
